Periwinkle, which is also called Vinca rosea
and Vinca multiflora, grows 7 to 24 inches tall and wide. Its brittle stems are
covered in white, pink, or rosy-purple flowers that form a mound. There are
cultivars that grow like carpets or straight up. During the warm months, there
are lots of flowers, but plants may not do well when it's very hot. The plant
blooms even when it's very hot outside, which is probably better than most
other flowering ground covers. If you plant the seeds 12 to 20 inches apart and
feed them, water them lightly (or not at all), and put them in full sun, the
plants will grow into a solid mass of mounded leaves and flowers in 6 to 8
weeks.
Plants
can be spread by seeds or cuts. In the summer, you can take softwood buds and
root them. If the temperature is between 70°F and 75°F, the seed will sprout in
one week. Do not water the flat of seeds too much and keep it in the dark until
the seeds sprout. In USDA hardiness zones 10 and 11, you can plant at any time
of the year.
