Luna 25 crashed..!
Russia's Luna-25 spacecraft
smashed into the moon after spinning into an uncontrolled orbit, according to
Russia's space agency Roskosmos on Sunday. Luna-25 was Russia's first voyage to
the moon in 47 years. The news came just a day after Roskosmos reported a
problem navigating Luna-25 into a pre-landing orbit."On August 19 and 20,
measurements taken to locate and contact the craft were unsuccessful."
The primary goal of Luna-25 is to
study the Moon's south pole region, which is of great interest to scientists
due to the possibility of finding water ice in permanently shadowed craters.
Some of the mission's key objectives include:
🌐Surface Analysis: Luna-25 will
carry a suite of scientific instruments to analyze the lunar surface
composition, topography, and mineralogy.
⛇Water Ice Search: The lander will
search for signs of water ice in the permanently shadowed regions near the
lunar south pole, which could be a valuable resource for future lunar missions.
🌝Seismology: Luna-25 is equipped
with instruments to study lunar seismic activity, which can help scientists
better understand the Moon's internal structure.
⛈Soil Sampling: The lander will
collect and analyze soil samples from the lunar surface, providing valuable
data about the Moon's geology.
On Sunday, Russia's Luna-25
spacecraft crashed with the Moon, ending the competition to be the first to
arrive at the Moon's uncharted south pole, which experts believe has
significant amounts of frozen water and other materials. According to the
Russian space agency Roscosmos, Luna-25 spun into an uncontrolled orbit before
crashing into the Moon's surface. Luna-25 was scheduled to settle on the Moon's
south pole on Monday, August 21.
Russia's first lunar mission
since it was a part of the Soviet Union in 1976. Only three governments have
successfully landed on the Moon: the Soviet Union, the United States, and
China. According to the Russian space agency, the lunar probe was supposed to
enter a landing orbit after being pushed for its origin. Still, due to a
divergence in its path, it entered an undesignated orbit. "During the
operation, an emergency scenario arose on board the automatic station, which
prevented the manoeuvre from being carried out within the stipulated
circumstances...."The connection with the Luna-25 automatic lunar probe
was lost around 2:57 pm Decree time," Roscosmos said, adding that all
attempts to communicate with the lunar probe failed.
According to preliminary
investigation results, "a difference between the actual and calculated
parameters of the propulsion manoeuvre caused the Luna-25 spacecraft to enter
an undesignated orbit and it ceased to exist following a collision with the
surface of the Moon."
